Two weeks ago, my son turned one and I played in a professional orchestra concert. I haven't done that for a couple of years, and my heart turned to molten in my stomach when we played Grieg's Piano Concerto. One of my favorite spots is in the third movement, with chord changes that you can hear singled out in this small section from 23:51-24:08. I believe these chords are Major 1 and Flat Major 7 (written in chord shorthand as I and bVII). Without getting too technical about the theory (I have a music education degree and it even makes my brain hurt), I'll just postulate here that it is one of the most heavenly chord progressions in existence!
It reminded me of Robbie Williams' "Millennium," and I looked up the origins of his 1998 hit because it would make me so happy if he had borrowed from Grieg, like F yeah! Sadly, he hadn't, but it turns out he did borrow from a song from 1967, recorded by Nancy Sinatra for the James Bond film "You Only Live Twice." I can't find the inspiration behind that, but I found other songs that sample it as well, including Lea Michele's "You're Mine." *see left: pic of me dressed as her Glee character Rachel Berry back in 2010*Some people collect rocks (and that's great, yo). I've begun collecting songs that hit that I-bVII slice of heaven. The day I find good free-to-download music producing software and have time to play around, I will mash them together. In the meantime, below are some pictures and vids of me dressing up like Nancy Sinatra for Halloween and singing part of "You Only Live Twice." Apparently, she was so nervous that she recorded the song in several chunks. If it looks like I was making an homage to her in my style here, you are more than welcome to believe that, and not just that I'm a busy mom without the time to practice doing the song without mistakes (or assistance changing instruments).
Enjoy! Eh, and if you don't, that's fine. It's my first time putting myself out there on the internet this way, but it's not my first time putting myself out there. I can take some criticism. I'm not looking for reviews though; this is just for fun.
